Post bop alto saxist Immanuel Wilkins brings six fairly concise and one long original tune to be interpreted by his core unit of Micah Thomas/p, Daryl Johns/b and Kwedu Sumbry/dr, supplemented by Farfina Kan/perc and Elena Pinderhughes/fl on a few of the tunes. Of the latter, Wilkins and Pinderhughes are in an assertive mood over Sumbry’s intense and loose drumming on the freeboppper “Lighthouse”, with the flute floating over the gentle and patient Thomas on “Witness”. The Kan Percussion Ensemble provides a rich Afro Cuban clippety clop for the cadence of “Don’t Break”, while the core unit loses nothing in fervent undercurrent on the busy and bright “Emanation”. Wilkins shows his church side of life on the gentle and gospel’d “Fugitive Ritual, Selah”, and the team really stretches out for 26+ minutes on the dark, screeching and scrambling “Lift”. Except for the last piece, your attention is kept rapt for the rich mix of nuance and passion, with the latter sounding almost like a jam once most of the audience has left the first set.
