Katie Henry sings with a rural grit, playing piano and guitar as well with a band of Antar Goodwin/b-slg, Ben Rice/g, Kurt Thum/p-org, Greg Wieczorek/dr and Giles Robson/harm, who blows a mean wind off of Lake Michigan on the Chicago’d blues of “Too Long”. There’s a lot of dirt under the nails on the fuzzy and rocking “Bury You” with some upbeat slide guitar work and 70s stomping on “Without A Fight” and “On My Way.” On the acoustic side, she’s vulnerable on the ballad “Running Around” with pianist Thum, and is gently folksy on the rural “Blessings” and “Setting Sun”. Girl next door with the blues.
Julie Christensen sings with a voice that reminds one of either Bonnie Raitt or Maria Muldaur, filled with folksy roots showing. The band consists of mostly Gregory Boaz/b, Chris Benelli/dr, Sergio Webb-Chris Tench/g with a bunch of cameo guests coming in here and there. All of the tunes are from the pen of Kevin Gordon, with some sounding a bit like vintage Delaney and Bonnie (“Find My Way”) with some Nashville skyline showing on “Joey and Clara”. The team gets grungy as they trudge th rough “Gatlin Gun” and “Gloryland” with a trip to the VFW on the home spun “Heart’s Not In It/Down To The Well”. Music for the troubadour’d.
