Gabriel Zucker plays piano and electronics on this two disc set of his compositions, producing the album and even bringing in lyrics that he vocalizes on with an ensemble of horns, strings and rhythm. The music is a four part suite of “Past”, “Autumn 2016”, “Present” and “Future”, at times sounding like snippets cut and passed together or eerie strings and piano colliding into chaos on “Part I”. There are harrowing moments with the strings, synthetic pulses and indie voiced poems on “Part II”, plucking pianos and sustained tensions with background noises on “Part III” and a cacophonic climax on “Part IV”. Why does “free” music sound so stultified?
