Like all music groups, Gordon Goodwin’s Big Phat Band had to do a “Plan B” with recording and performing. This 5 song ep is appropriately titled, as the band has done a “Reset” with personnel and styles. Still with the famous horn sections, the band has a more electric sound with Kevin Axt and new guitarist Will Brahm. Original member Eric Marienthal sears through the funky shuffle of the soulful “Six Feet Away” and Brahm rocks out with tenor saxist Brian Scanlon on the dark title tune. Vangie Gunn coos through an 80s R&B’d “Through The Fire” and charter members Andy Martin/tb, Jeff Driskill/ts and Eric Marienthal/as bring in Mike Rocha/tp for a Basie grooved “My Man Sam” before the album closes with a cozy “Cell Talk”. Some new land discovered, with the songs serving as an invitation to catch LA’s best big band in a local club, COVID laws permitting.
