Cleanest of the cool toned, or coolest of the clean tones, guitarist Doug MacDonald continues to carry the bop guitar torch from Herb Ellis on this vintage sounding trio album of standards and originals. He’s in a trio setting, his best milieu, with simpatico gents Mike Flick/b and Paul Kreibich, delivering suave readings of pieces like “Frenesi” and a gracefully swinging “They Say It’s Wonderful” are getting a bit blue on the suffling “Next Time You See Me”. MacDonald also adds extra effects l ike the conga-like picking on a niftyu “Dearly Beloved”, with Flick adding to the samba feel of “Shadow Waltz” and the sotto voce of “Manha De Carnival”. MacDonald’s pen is as classy as his pick, graceful on the title piece and bopping over Kreibich’s brushes on “Horense”. Sublime strings.
