Classic, vintage and tasty trio work served up by pianist Bill Charlap an his bandmates Peter Washington/b and Kenny Washington/dr. This team has worked together for years, and the benefits of this long term relationship are palpable, with almost mind-reading and nuanced anticipation of each other’s musical thoughts and directions evident in each song.
Most of the tunes here start of with Charlap opening in soft and lyrical solo fashion, with reflective chimes on “Day Dream” or calm soliloquy to “I’ll Know” before Kenny Washington’s brushes assuage the pulse with a calm cadence. Charlap opens and closes “What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life” all alone, with the middle being the middle of the camel’s hump, while his stride gets assertive when the brushes are exchanged for sticks half way through “Out of Nowhere”. The three are in relaxed conversation for “Street of Dreams” and stately for “You’re All The World To Me” all the while letting the genius of the melody and harmonies do their own work, like the best of Tuscan chefs trusting the basic ingredients of their meal. Tasty to the last bite.
