Beth McKenna: Beyond Here

From Canada, Beth McKenna makes a good impression here, playing tenor, soprano and tenor sax along with flute and clarinet, even adding some vocals with her band of Francois Jalbert/eg, Guillaume Martineau/p-key, Olivier Babaz/b, Peter Colantonion/dr and vocalist Sara Rossy. Between a number of the songs are a series of “Interludes” that range from a pretty and piano on “Not Alone” do a dark and raspy shriek on “Human Malfunction”. Her ballad work is impressive, romantic on baritone on “Finding A  Place” and rich with Jalbert for “Divided Into One”. She also gets a bit funky with Martineau on “Streets of Mexico City” and sways on the rockish “Perspective”, getting absolutely swampy on the R&Bish “After the Storm” and “Ele(ctro)phant. Versatile ventures.
