Comprised of Sundar Viswanathan/as-ss-bansur-voc, Felicity Williams/voc, Michael Occhipinti/eg, Justin Gray/eb, Ravi Naimpally/perc-tab, Max Senitt/dr and guests Aaron Lightsone/oud and Toddy Pentney/key, the band Avataar brings in rich soundscapes reminiscent of vintage Pat Metheny but with the addition of South Asian percussion. The mix of tablas and Williams’ wordless vocals bring a sublime mood along with Viswanathan’s soprano on “Ekriis Spirito” and “A Safe Space For Children” while Williams’ lyrics bring an indie feel alongside Gray’s guitar on “Song Song” and “Blue As It Ever Was”. The mysterious oud and dark ethereal bansur flute glide with Gray on “Chrysalis” while Pentney’s piano and Viswanathan’s alto takes you on a graceful journey on ”Little Kurd”. An eastern travel to the west.
