Honey toned vocalist and rootsy violinist Ilana Katz Katz mixes swing, bluegrass and blues on this album of mostly originals with a team of Johnny Burgin/g, Stephen Dougherty/dr, Chris Matheos/b and a couple guests. The mood is like a night at the local VFW, as the team delivers a funky swamp of the title piece, while swaying like Bob Wills on “Well, Well Blues” and “Won’t Pass Me By”. She can create some harrowing atmospheres as the team trudges through the muck of “ Woman, Play the Blues” and the dark “Nine Souls” while putting out a fun two stepper on “Bad Child”. There’s a single instrumental, that is a hoe down of “Hangman’s Reed” and the album closes with a filed holler of “If”. Rural treasures.
