GIRLS WITH THE BLUES…Sue Foley: Pinky’s Blues, Robbin Kapsalis & Vintage #18: Soul Shaker

Canadian guitarist and singer Sue Foley belts out the boogie blues rocking with Jon Penner/b, Chris Layton/dr, Mike Flanigin/B3 and guest Jimmie Vaughan on this barrelhouse collection of juke joint jumpers. She shows some impressive chops jamming with Vaughan on “Hurricane Girl” and hitting the Strat strings on instrumentals like the title track and shuffling “Okie Dokie stomp”. Her voice has a dash of Nina Simone soul  on the two stepper “Dallas Man” and she sears through the B3 smoke on “Say It Isn’t So” with a wail and a shout. She uses a broad paint brush to cover the canvas with blue on a rich ballad “Think It Over” and digs deep on a hoochie coochie’d read of Willie Dixon’s “When The Cat’s Gone, The Mice Play” with a trip down to the South Side of Chicago. As tasty and thick as Gino’s pizza.

Robbin Kapsalis sounds like a lady you don’t want to mess with as she’s teamed with an air tight team of Alex Kuldell/dr, Bill Holter/g, Mark Chandler/b-g and some guest horns on a sweaty low ceilinged session. She shuffles with tenor saxist Ron Holloway on a boogalooin’ “Shake It Baby” and preaches with him on the streets during “Jukin’”. She’s in quite the mood during the Animals’ riffed “From The Heart Of One” and stomps the swamp on “You Don’t Deserve Me”. The guitars are searing as the swirl on “Boogaloo” and bend the  blues on “Living Large”. This lady works up a sweat!
