Chad Lefkowitz-Brown and the Global Big Band: Open World

Tenor saxist Chad Lefkowitz-Brown fronts a 17+ member Global Big Band and some ringer guests through some beefed up arrangements of jazz standards. CLB’s own tenor is big and beefy, teaming up with bright tone trumpeter Arturo Sandoval in a modern and bold “Night in Tunisia” and swings it hard with alto saxist Miguel Zenon on a sprint through of “Airgin”. The calypso’d “St. Thomas” features a puffy Melissa Aldana teamed with the leader, while guitarist Lionel Loueke’s tensile strings add sleek features to some Rollins roaring on “India”. Bria Skonberg taps into her inner Billie Holiday for “La Vie En Rose” and there’s a major percussion discussion with pianist Makoto Ozone on a thrilling “United”. Modern threads on a vintage form.
