Composed of a two woodwind front line of Michael Marcus/ts-bcl-bfl and Joe McPhee/ts-ss-acl and a lithe rhythm team of Warren Smith/dr-vib and Jay Rosen/dr-perc, the Blue Reality Q uartet adapts to the COVID lockdown masked and socially distanced in sound and composition on this album. The music has a spacious and openness to it, as on the mystery blue tones of “Love Exists Everywhere” and the reflective “Warren’s Theme” with rich bass flute and tenor sax floating above the static pulse of vibes and drum. Marcus’ bass clarinet and McPhee’s soprano teeter totter to the swaing “Chartreuse Tulips” with the twin tenors trudging through the thick “Joes Train”. Most loose is the hovering “Bluer Than Blue” and free mist of “East Side Dilemma”. No bass, no piano, no problem.
