BEST ACOUSTIC GUITARIST? Romero Lubambo & Rafael Piccolotto Chamber Orchestra: Live at Dizzy’s Lincoln Center New York City

I’ve seen guitarist Romero Lubambo in a variety of settings, usually accompanying vocalist Luciana Souza, and he’s got to be the most sublime and lyrical acoustic guitarist of our days. He plays a bit of electric guitar as well, showing both talents un a chamber orchestra atmosphere under the conductor’s baton of Rafael Piccolotto De Lima on this gorgeously lush album. There’s a mix of Lubambo’s own compositions as well as some clever takes of covers, such as a Latinized “Route 66” with the joyful vocals of Pamel Driggs” while Lubambo weaves through the complex charts of “Samba De Proveta” and dances to Vitor Gocalves’ accordion on “Pret-A-Porter De Tafeta”. His nylon strings are sensitive and tender on his romantic “Bachaiao” and intimate with Driggs on the fragrant “By The Stream” while ricocheting off the percussion and searing through the woodwinds of “Pro Flavio”. You could listen to this guy and his six strings all day and never utter a complaint.
