If you think today’s country is pale and stale, you’re gonna want to look for this one by a pair of guys where are/were the real deal. Recently departed Billy Joe Shaver, known for writing a ton of “outlaw” songs for Waylon Jennings, met up with redneck Tribe member Kinky Friedman for an unforgettable gig in Sydney, Australia back in 2002. A few of the tunes include supporting work by Little Jewford/key, Jesse Taylor/g and Washington Ratso/g, but for the most part these two guys kick the dirt of their boots for some real dusty pathed trips to the Moose Lodge.
Shaver, a true example of God’s grace, is even introduced as the guy who coined the phrase “If you don’t love Jesus, just go to hell”. If that’s your style of evangelism, then you’re gonna have a good time chewin’ tobacco and taking in his reads of his own classics like “Old Five and Dimers Like Me”, the rural “Ride Me Down Crazy” and “Honky Tonk Heroes”. Friedman, for his part, delivers a hoot of “Ride ‘em Jewboy” and “Wild Man From Borneo”. If you lean towards Garth Brooks, keep on moving, but if George Jones or David Allen Coe would feel comfortable in your Barcalounger, then step into this trailer load of tunes.
