Alto saxist Adam Nolan goes inside and out on this trio album with bassist Derek Whyte and drummer Dominic Mullan that ranges from deep bop pockets to trips into the stratosphere. His horn is bright and pungent, going in rapid fire in “The Magic Carpet” and screeching out some howls and squawks over Mullan’s torrent on “Kun Fu Master Vs. The Ape,” but he shows he can dig a deep groove on the free bopper “Expand the Tempo” riding the long board over Whyte’s bass line. The rhythm team sways like a chandelier during an earthquake on “Ancient Mayan Jungle” and rumbles along under Nolan’s shiney light for “The Modern Jazz Trio”. A trip through some deep reeds!
