STILL ASLEEP AFTER ALL THESE YEARS….Asleep At The Wheel: Half A Hundred Years

Celebrating 50 years of Western Swing, members and alumni of Asleep At The Wheel get together for this festive album of juke joint jumping material. Vocalist Ray Benson is still at the helm, along with old timers Floyd Domino/p, Jimmy Gimble/vi, Chris O’Connell/voc-g and some  two stepping Texas guests. There’s an all out jam session that includes slide steel guitarist Cindy Cashdollar on “The Wheel Boogie” while George Strait and Willie Nelson give go all the way back to Bob Wills for a Playboy’d “Take Me Back To Tulsa”. Nelson goes solo on a nostalgic “Marie”, Emmylou Harris joins him on a heartwarming “The Road Will Hold Me Tonight” while Leroy  Preston, Johnny Nicholas and Ray Benson cruise the highway on “Route 66”. Lyle Lovett is right at home as he  honky tonks through “There You Go Again” and Bill Kirchner picks out a nice Tele for “Word To The Wise”. When did music stop being this fun?
