Acoustic and electric bassist Michael Feinberg leads his octet of Jeff Tain Watts/dr, Orrin Evans/p, Godwin Louis/as, Billy Buss/tp, Gabriel Globus-Hoenich/perc, Noah Preminger/ts, randy Brecker/tp and Leon Genovese/key through a collection of rhythmic originals. Feinberg’s bass does some hip work with a muted Buss on “Nardis” , with the team getting into a Herbie Hancock mood on the Blue Note-ish “Husafell Stone”. On electric bass, he works out on a Weather Reportish “Lauren’s Song” with the pretty horns, while playing peek-a-boo with Genovese on “Janky In The Middle”. Randy Brecker gets funky with Preminger on the elliptical “Monkeys Never Cramp” and the team gets churchy and blue on the dramatic title track. Deep grooves in different soils planted well.
