Jorge Rossy-Robert Landfermann-Jeff Ballard:  Puerta

It’s interesting and revealing that two of the gents here, Jorge Rossy/vib-mar and Jeff Ballard/d-perc, spent time in Brad Mehldau’s piano trio. They, along with bassist Robert Landfermann, take on originals by (mostly) Rossy on post bop themes that at times feel like a pianoless version of the Modern Jazz Quartet. This is most evident on the easy groove driven on “Ventana” and the echoey ballad with brushes on “Maybe Tuesday” as well as the delicate mix of cymbals and bass for “Adagio”. The vibes chime daintily with a rumbling bass on the quietude of “Post-Catholic Waltz” and the marimba softly wanders for “Tainos” and alongside the paradiddles on the ambient “Puerta”. A blueser closes things out on “Adios”, but even this has the tux and tails feel of the MJQ. Elegant chamber tones.
