Gary Meek: Monterey Groove

Gary Meek produces upbeat smooth jazz sounds on flute, tenor sax and keyboards with a mix and match ensemble that includes Michael Lent/g, Robert Wider/b, Akiti Bradley/tp and the drum team of either Skylar Campbell or all star Dave Weckl. Weckl drives his V8 engine under Meek’s tenor on the upbeat “For A Long Time” while the leader brings in Bradley for a pair of Brecker Brothers-ish pieces, the hip “Move Out!” and “Horizon” with Campbell. Meek’s flute glides over Lent’s wacka wooka guitar on the soulful “Canner Roy” while his tenor does some nice tricky interplay with guitarist Robert Papacica on the hopping “Bosphorous Blues”. On soprano, Meek rides the funky Famous Flames feel on “Power Station” and digs deep on Wider’s groove for “Shuffle This”. Smooth sailing with some white caps.
