Daniel Garcia Trio: Via de la Plata

Daniel Garcia plays piano, Rhodes and some synths with his core trio of Reiner Elizarde/b and Michael Olivera/dr and a rotating guest team of Ibrahim Maalouf/tp, Gerardo Nunez/g and Anat Cohen/cl. In the Spartan setting, Garcia’s team evokes thoughts of Brad Mehldau’s trio on the richly conversant “Volar” and flowing “Mar de la tranquilidad”. Maalouf is soft and puffy, gentle over Elizarde’s bass on “Cancio del Fuego Fatuo” and meditative on “The Silk Road”. Nunez is flamenco festive over the claps of “Calle Campania” and assertive on the dramatically Iberian “Calima”. Cohen’s woody stick swings gently on “La Leyenda del Tiempo” and goes on a wide range of dynamics to Olivera’s military sticks during the dramatic title tune.  A thoroughly charming affair.
