Carlos Henriquez: The South Bronx Story

Best known for his work with the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra, bassist Carlos Henriquez steps away from Wynton Marsalis’ baton and brings together his own team of Jeremy Bosch/fl-voc, Melissa Aldana/ts, Michael Rodriguez/tp, Anthony Almonte/cong, Marshall Gilkes/tb, Robert Rodriguez/key, Obed Calvaire/dr and guest Terell Stafford/tp for a collection of post bopping Latin originals. Bosch brings macho vocals to the loping “Hydrants Love All” , the bright and bold “Soy Humano” and extroverted “Hip Hop Con Clave”. Aldana’s tenor adds flavor to the strut of “The South B ronx” and gets into a Coltrane mood around Henriquez’s solo on “Black (Benji)”. The leader’s bass leads into a percussion discussion on the dance of “Fort Apache” and adds the gospel feel to “Moses At The Cross”, allowing Stafford to preach it. Flavors from all parts of the streets of South Bronx and taken in.
