Paxton/Spangler Septet: Anthem For The New Nation

One of the more under-appreciated composers in jazz, Abdullah Ibrahim, has a collection of his compositions adroitly interpreted by the co-led team of Tbone Paxton/tb and RJ Spangler/perc along with a team of Phillip J. Hale/key, Sean Perlmutter/dr, Jeff Cuny/b, Daniel Bennett/ts, Rafael Leafar/as-fl, Kasan Belgrave/as, Damon Warmack/eb and James O’Donnell/fh. The pieces range from a street celebration feel of the galloping “African Marketplace” (with a nice tenor solo by Bennett) to a dark and probing “Moniebah” that includes yearning trombone action from Paxton. Hale gets bluesy with some percolating piano on the soft “Cape Town Fringe” and gives reflective chords on “Whoza Mtwana”. Spangler’s congas and various percussions create a soft pilaf for Leafar’s flute on “The Perfumed Forest” and adds soul to the festive title track, as Hale’s keyboards give some strut and saunter. The songs are all clever in their intent as well as viscerally alluring, making you want to go back and delve into the composer’s catalogue a bit more.
