Playing mostly alto sax with a dash of soprano, Mike Cohen leads a quartet of Brian Gelfand/p, Ronen Itzik/dr and Danny Weller/b through a mix of (mostly) post modern originals. His tone is warm and easy on the ears, most evident on the lovely aria with Gelfand on Paul Simon’s “The Boxer” but also swinging easy with the team under Weller’s bass on “Reset”. Gelfand’s ivories and Itzik’s brushes swerve well on the gentle “Eulogy for Anne” and the rhythm team cascades under Cohen’s ebullient soprano on “Winter Sun”. A rich walk through warm reeds.
