Zacc Harris Group: Small Wonders

Clever post bop guitar work is featured by Zacc Harris with a strong team of John Raymond/tp-fh, Brandon Wozniak/ts and a rhythm section of Bryan Nichols/p,  Chris Bates/b and JT Bates/dr. Harris’ tone, style and delivery gives hints of John Scofield, veering through the dark harmonies of the horns on the modal “Ominous Skies” that sounds like something from a Coltrane “Africa” session. The three dig in deep for a wild ride of “The Void” while Raymond gives soft Hub-tones around Harris’ fragrant work on the spacelike “Glass Houses”. Harris and Nichols produce a nimble line over a graceful cadence on “Civil Dawn”, (sounding a bit like Miles Davis circa “Nefertiti”) and serve up an elegant duet on “A Beautiful Life” with lovely fluidity. Harris closes things out with a rich and reflective “Maya Song”. This is Harris’ third album as a leader, and he is definitely going in a right direction.
