Planet Flippo: Dedications

Subtitled “Jazz From Planet Flippo”, this five piece band is lead by Dave Flippo/p-key-mel along with Donn De Santo/b, Dan Hesler/ts-ss-fl, Heath Chappell/dr and Aras Biskis/perc as vintage jazz sounds are melded with originals and some covers. The latter includes a hip bass line read of Stevie Wonder’s “Too High” with some soulful tenor work by Hesler, and a read of Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab” with some boogalooing by Flippo’s piano alongside Hesler’s sax. Vintage Blue Note flavored  hard bop is in the air on “Giraffe Trek” with Latin leanings and Hesler’s flute on “Finch House”. A Middle Eastern pulse dances to the snappy “Syrtotoc” and a richly slow ¾ piece ends up swinging as it  features the leader on piano form “Four-Four Waltz”. Chappell lays it on for the intro to the mysterious “Metamorphosis” with Hesler’s soprano and De Santo getting some air to breath, but the whole album is a fresh team effort.
