Trombonist and composer Peter Tijerina teams up with Corey Kendrick/p, Aneesa Strings/b, Nick Bracewell/dr and guests Michael Dease/tb with Diego Rivera/ts on this mix of post bop originals and covers.
The extra brass works well as they ride over Bracewell’s snappy sticks on “ It Could Happen To You” while forming a rich and palpable texture for the pretty “Strange Breakfast” featuring Kendrick’s lyrical ivories. Strings opens up with a full house on the modal and dark “Deviation” and the team double times on the hard swinging read of “This Could Be The Start of Something Big”. Tijerina goes solo on a soft and lyrical take on “Stardust” while getting hip on the bopping “In N’ Out Blues’ with Strings” with warm vibrato during the elegant “Just Yesterday”. Polished brass.
