Trumpeter Pete Rodrigues uses his warm and rich sounding trumpet in a wide variety of post bop settings with John Ellis/ts-ss, Luis Perdomo/p-key, Ricardo Rodriguez/b and Rudy Royston/dr on this mix of originals. On the two tunes with soulful keyboards, Rodriguez is soft and gentle with Ellis’ sole soprano sax venture on the sublime “Someone Else” while getting more CTI hip with Ellis on tenor for “Triple Positive.” On piano, Perdomo gives a flowing intro to the intricate and sharply angled “Academic Backstabbing 101” and is nifty teaming with Royston’s sticks during “El Processo”. The leader is velvety on the modal dance of “Abraham” and loose with the team on the assertive “50”. Confident deliveries.
