Any time you have an album with drummer Mike Clark in it, you’re going to get a workshop of how to work the sticks. Here, he teams up with Michael Zilber on tenor and soprano saxes and joined by pianist Matt Clark and Peter Barshay. Clark is as crisp as autumn leaves on the “Warm Up”-sounding bopper “Barshay Fly” with Zilber in full bel canto form on the tenor, with the tenor filling the room and the hard hitting “Sonny Monk (If I Were A)”. The two Clarks boogaloo on a fun take of “Norwegian Wood” while giving a dark modal take of “Passion Dance”. Zilber’s soprano is cute with graceful framework by Clark on “Monk’s Dream” and hip as Clark gives a 5 foot wave for Zilber to longboard over on “Blackbird”. This album doesn’t let go!
