Pianist and composer Mehmet Ali Sanlikol mixes jazz and Anatolian folk music to create a rich tapestry of music and worship on this album with James Heazlewood-Dale/b and George Lernis/dr-perc. Think of this like an Asia Minor version of A Love Supreme, as many of the tunes, such as “The 7th Day”, “Lost Inside” and “Hasret: Anadolu Jazz” mix intimate trio work with meditative high pitched voicings, almost prayer like. The are also a series of interconnecting solo “Preludes” “Interludes” and “Postludes” that display clean and clear piano tones as well as reflective bass and fervent hand drum work. The team is most outright jazzy on the post bopping “Invitation” and the title tune, but most of the time you feel like you’re observing someone’s private devotion time. A prayer at dawn.
