This may be a session led by guitarist John Stein, but electric bassist Ed Lucie sure figures into the success of this hip trio session along with drummer Mike Connors. Leader Stein has a clean and warm tone to his six strings, well displayed on “East of the Sun and West of the Moon” and the bopper Labor Of Love”. Yet, it is the support and directions given by Lucie’s electric bass that is most impressive, as he teams with Connors’ brushes on the delicately cool “Alfie’s Theme” and the samba “Insensatez” while lilting under the Stein on the nimble “On Green Dolphin Street”. Connors digs in on “Elvin” and the team boogaloos to the fun “Bing Bang Boom!” while creating sharp angles to the bebopper “Well, You Needn’t”. A chord of three strands not easily broken, indeed!
