Dave Zinno Unisphere: Fetish

Bassist Dave ZInno states that this album is “the culmination of a yar without live music. Every ounce of energy and ambition, in reserve from not expending it for so long, is on this record”. That captures the feelings of a lot of artists, with fans feeling almost the same way in the reception line.

The album has Zinno leading a team of Mike Tuncer/ts, Eric Benny Bloom/tp-fh, Leo Genovese/p-key, Tim Ray/p, Rafael Barata/dr and guest Rafael Roca/tb hitting hard, with Zinno creating a deep bass line on “Fetish” and Genovese flowing with Barata on the hopeful “Out of the Hole”. The band sounds ESP-era Miles Davis on the rumbling “Unknown Mystery” with Bloom leading the charge, with Tucker giving breathy subtones on the romantic “Beatriz” or getting aggressive on “Future History”.  ZInno gives some rich bow work on Over the Horizon” and adds the exotic percussion instrument, the cuico on the spacy “Nile”. An assertive reunion.
