Whether it’s a social event or a concert, whenever there’s a crowd of people, there are always one or two who know how to “work a room”. Pianist and keyboardist Sam Ross works the crowd at the Mira Room like putty in his hands mixing hip soul jazz with fun fusion as he teams up with bassist Simba Distis and drummer Dr. Dimmi Mured for a hip six song set. Mured and Distis are a force to be dealt with as they lay down an irresistible backbeat for the groove-daden “Bryan’s Room”, with Distis opening up the Headhunting “City Stroll” with a rubber neck electric bass before Ross fries the funky chicken. Ross glides over the shuffle rhythm of the pretty and bouncy “Beauty Has No Ceiling” and the team skates like Dorothy Hamill on the delicately delightful “Bear” before the team closes things out with a kinetic gallop of “Music Is King”. Good sounds for head, heart and feet.
