Singer/songwriter Jon Allen is a throwback to the troubadours of the 70s on this collection of 11 originals. He mixes his road-worn voice with guitar and occasional drumming , mixing and matching with Rich Milner/B3, Luke Bullen-Adam Skinner-Pat Levett/dr, Sharon Shannon/acc and some strings. He rocks hard on the upbeat “Can’t Hold Back the Sun” and “Suzanne” while getting a bit dark on “Blame It All On Me”. On acoustic guitar, he’s a minstrel on the observant “Mercy”, “Wrong” and “Looking For The Light” and bluesy for “How Long” while casting a Nashville skyline for “Cruel World”. Wry messages and contemplations show a spirit that is searching, something we all could do a bit more before posting some anger on Facebook.
