Jesse Harris & Vinicius Cantuaria: Surpresa

A mixture of Americas takes place with neo bossa vocalist/guitarist Vinicius Canturaria teaming up with trad American Jesse Harris, best noted for his work with Norah Jones, Melody Gardo and Madeleine Peyroux on this collection of mixed and matched ideas. Both gents bring their worldviews to the table, as Gardot adds vocals and piano for some material and Cantuaria buddy Bill Frisell brings his electric guitar ideas into the equations, along with other guests gabi Hartman/voc, CJ Cameriei/horns, Tony Scherr/b, Jeremy Gustin/perc and Will Graefe/p.

For the most part, the album is divided evenly between hemispheres, with “Colibri” and “O Maria” featuring Frisell’s textures supporting Cantuaria’s sotto voce along the gliding Brazilian  pulse. Harris is folksy on “Waiting” and “far Away”, getting into an indie mood with Gardo on “How Long” and the lovely title track. The team delivers one soft instrumental on “Little Star” and gets bluesy on the simple charms of “You, The Queen”. Quiet nights and quiet stars in the Cumberland Gap.
