Mainstream post bopping alto saxist Steve Slagle adds another rich volume to his impressive catalogue with a core team of Bruch Barth/p, Ugonna Okegwo/b and Jason Tiemann/dr along with guests Jeremy Pelt/tp and Clark Gayton/tb for a mix of bopping originals and an intriguing five part suite. The latter, entitled “Nascentia Suite”, includes a rapid running “All Up In It” with Gayton’s hard hitting trombone, Pelt riding the Coltrane wave on the modal “Agama” and rich on the warm title piece, with interludes by Okegwo and Tiemann tying the opus together. Slagle’s alto is upbeat on “We Release” and swinging easy on “A Friend In Need” while his flute excursion with Barth is classy on the glassy “I Remember Britt”. Never a wrong note or attitude from this guy, who for some reason always gets overlooked when the list of great living alto players is mentioned.
