Steve Cole: Smoke + Mirrors

Full bodied tenor saxist Steve Cole delivers a smooth R&Bish album with a team including Bernd SChoenhart/g, Trevor Neuman/tp-fh, Mel Brown/b, Brian Dunne/dr and David Mann, who plays keyboards and a plethora of reeds along with drum programing. You get some wacka wooka soulish guitar work on the Sly and Family Stone-ish “It’s A House Party”, “Loves Me, Loves Me Not” and disco’d “On The Money”. The 1970s glitter like a ball for Cole as he digs in on the synthy “Wayman” and “Covent Garden”, with the prettiest moments coming when Cole works with nylon stringed Schoenhart on “Smoke and Mirrors” and the romantic “Trust” with his moodiest musings gliding through on the misty “At A Distance”. Even the sideburns on the back picture take you back to the Carter years-try bringing in Gloria Gaynor for some vocals and you’d have a matched set.
