Richie Kaye’s Space City Funtet: Blast Off!

Richie Kaye is building up a catalogue of music that is made for some undetermined sound track. This latest album has the leader playing just about anything you can hit with a stick, push, pull or clang, along with Tony La Vorgna/as-cl, Ernesto Vega/fl-ts-cl-bcl, Thomas Helton/b-tub and Sam Kuslan/p in a collection of 17 vignettes that sound they could be subtitled “Spike Jones: The Early Years”. There are vocals by Kaye, sometimes whimsical lyrics and other times things like “Doo Dee” or “Hey Ho!” with tunes ranging from Mr. Rogers moods on “Dapper Dinghy” to a sweet alto sax on “Sarah and Christine” while merry melodies prevail on the likes of “Phodly” and “Itty Bitty Kitty”. Didn’t this kind of music used to accompany a book, with signals when to turn the pages?
