Trumpeter John Hasselback III leads a post bop team of Jonathan Barber/dr, Luques Curtis/b and Taber Gable/p as he rotates horn men Wayne Escoffery/axs and Steve Davis/tb through a collection of mostly originals. The one cover is a gorgeous duet version with Gable on “Body and Soul” that has a muted leader in breathtaking form. With Escoffrey on tenor, the team sounds like ESP-era Miles Davis on the sublime “B.F.G.” while the soprano sax makes the horns get elegiac on “Rene’s Way”. The team gets brassy Davis on the sleek “Blood Orange” with Gable adding dark hues to “Robert’s Run”, with the two closing out the album with a rich and bluesy “Kingsbridge”. Vintage tones.
