Jeremy Monteiro-Jay Anderson-Lewis Nash: Live At No Black Tie

This may be the first jazz gig recording I’ve ever heard in Malaysia’s capitol, Kuala Lumpur. Pianist Jeremy Monteiro leads a trio with bassist Jay Anderson and drummer Lewis Nash through a mix of originals and jazz standards through a swinging set, making you want to fly over there and check out the scene.

Monteiro has a confident touch with a dash of Bill Evans, well displayed on “In Your Own Sweet Way” and his own “Josefina” while giving a rich stomp of the fingers to “Monk On The Mountain” with everyone stretching out for the 12 minute tune. Nash and Anderson lead the way on the modal “Mode For Love” with Nash doing some deft brush work on “Just In Time” and the waltzing “Life Goes On”. Nash and Anderson dig deep on the deep groove of “Watermelon Man” as well, making for a nice evening out in the new jazz center of Asia.
