Jeff Coffin plays just about every type of reed and beyond, teamed with Helen Gillet on cello and beyond on this collection of experimental tunes. Coffin can get a big Ben Webster tone on the playful “Unzen” or he can use the sax pads as percussion on the dark “Should I Stand” His bass clarinet is rich on “Second Wings” and there are rich reed textures on the delicate and elegant “Sometimes Springtime”. Gillet bends and snaps to Coffin’s soprano and guest Roy Wooten’s cajon on “Lazy Drag Jig” or can pull out an English folk them on “The Sandman”. Woodwind wonders with chilling cello.
