Jared Sims brings together a heavy hitting team of rhythm that features drummer Matt Wilson and bassist Rufus Reid along with organist Clifford Barnes and trombonist Reggie Watkins while he himself alternates between baritone sax and flute on swinging originals.
Sims’ sax has a rich gruffness that works well in contrast to Watkins’ cool bras on the grooving “Illuminating Truth” while the two bop well to Wilson’s cymbals on “Source of Life” and dig in deep to Wilson and Reid on the modal “Dialectic”. On flute, Sims is elegant with Barnes on “Visible Realm” and dances around Reid’s solo on “The Mind’s Eye”, with the rhythm team giving a rich cadence for Sim’s reed on “Vernal Rising”.
