Frank Morelli and Keith Oxman: The Ox-Mo Incident

No, Dana Andrews or Henry Fonda don’t show up on this album, but vintage and timeless sounds, with a bit of creativity, definitely do. The unique mix of Frank Morelli’s bassoon and Keith Oxman’s tenor make for some fascinating sounds, at times similar to vintage Gerry Mulligan of his “West Coast Cool” days along with Jeff Jenkins/p, Ken Walker/b and Todd Reid/dr. Morelli makes the usually unwieldy bassoon work wonders on the Mulliganesque tunes such as “Stanger In Paradise” the upbeat “A Wasp in Search of a Hart and Lung”, the coy “Happy Talk” and the clever title tune. Morelli does wonders on the samba’d take of “Baubles,  Bangles and Beads” and the team bops with delight to Jenkins’ ivories on a fun filled “Surrey With The Fringe On Top”. Morelli glistens on the classical-themed “Full Moon and Empty Arms” and is elegiac on “Three For Five”. Oxman’s tone is vintage breathy, giving an aria on “Poor Butterfly” and swinging progressively (but not as much as Andrews) on “The Ox-Mo Incident”. Classic moments.
