Tenor saxist Chad Lefkowitz-Brown brings a classic Hank Mobley sound to eleven covers with a pair of rhythm teams consisting of Holger Marjamaa-Steven Feifke/p, Dan Chmielinski-Alex Claffy/b and Bryan Carter-Corey Fonville/dr. There’s little to choose between the two bands, as they both bop like vintage Blue Note sessions, digging into the groove of “Caravan” and swinging with abandon on “Tenor Madness”. Feifky and Claffy have fun with Monk’s “Green Chimneys” and Carter lays down a tricky take for Chad’s subtones on “Let’s Cool One”. Chimielinsky gives a warm bass aria for “ My One and Only Love” The most clever take is a hard hitting read of The Beatles’ “Yesterday” and the funky beat of “Watermelon Man”. Tenor madness, indeed!
