Bassist Avishai Cohen releases an ambitious album that features his working team of drummer Mark Guiliana and pianist Elchin Shirinov joined with the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra conducted by Alexander Hanson. Cohen adds vocals on a few tracks, playing bass and synthesizers as well to the songs that include sweeping dances combining the Middle East and jazz on “Arab Medley” to percussive and sweeping pieces such as “Two Roses”. Many of the songs are intriguing in that they may begin with some rich and panoramic strings, as if they are waiting for the rhythm team to join in and pull the wagon train, as on the warm ride of “Morenik” and the kinetic “Alon Basela”, both with Cohen giving earthy vocals. The reverent voices of “Puncha Puncha” is almost liturgical, while the band sweeps along with vibes on the whirlwind of “Emotional Storm”. Petals that push.
