Vincent Herring: Preaching To The Choir

Alto saxist Vincent Herring is a graduate of the Cannonball Adderley school of soulful bebop, and there’s nothing wrong with that on this toe tapper with him in front of  Cyrus Chestnut/p, Yasushi Nakamura/b and Johnathan Blake/dr. He bares his soul on joyful bopper’s like his one swinging “Dudli’s Dilemma” or when he torches his alto on Joe Henderson’s burning “Granted”, equally fueled by Chestnut roasting by an open fire. Nakamura gives a tip of the hat to vintage bop on a killer joe of a line on “Old Devil Moon” while running a potato sack of a rack with Blake on the get down dig of Wes Montgomery’s “Fried Pies”. Chestnut prances like a preacher on a take of “Minor Swing” and taps into his deaconate role along with Herring’s pulpit work on the Sunday Morning pulsed title tune, that will have you rolling in the aisles. Bop with the real roots of the soul of the church.
