Tony Allen: There Is No End

One of the founding fathers of AfroBeat, teaming up with the legendary Fela for a number of years, drummer Tony Allen went urban R&B on this Blue Note album, obviously his last, that features a rotating team of synth players, rap singers and hip hoppers. Allen actually sings on the message “Tony’s Praeludium” along with metallic effects, while social messages are delivered by Sampa The Great on the electronic pulsed “Stumbling Down”. Effects and dance beats support Tsunami on “Tres Magnifique” with modern African grooves and chants deliverd by Nah Eeto on “Mau Mau” before Zelooperz gives some Barry White-styled R&B on “Coonta Kinte”. Lots of electronics, disco beats and BLM-style messages abound. Inner City Blues for the Millennials?
