Matt Panayides: Field Theory

Post bop and cool toned guitarist Matt Panayides forms a flowing team with tenor saxist Rich Perry, bassist Robert Sabin, drummer Mark Ferber and Matt Vashlishan on the elusive wind synthesizer. Sometimes, it’s hard to tell where the guitar ends and synth sounds begin, as Panayides has a tricky little sound to his strings, as on the impressionistic “Closer Now” and spacy “2.27.20”. There are some clever themes as on the serpentine  “Disturbance” with Panaydes and Perry giving some nice solos as well as on the fusiony title piece supported by Ferber’s backbeat. There’s a four part “Penta Folk” suite that mixes gentle guitar work, dark blues hues and ambient textures as well. Lots of colors on the palate.
