Pianist and composer Benito Gonzales puts “extra” into the word extrovert on this bold album of material with a core of all star bassist Christian McBride, guest trumpeter Nicholas Payton, drummers Sasha Mashin or Jeff “Tain” Watts and a handful of cameo guests. Gonzalez is in great step with McBride and Watts as they careen through the bold and macho “Views of the Blues” and is full fisted on the energetic title tune. Watts, McBride and Gonzalez sizzle through “Visionary”, and when Payton cannonballs into the pool, they all get nimble on “Smile” pretty on “Father” and lovely on “Flatbush Avenue”. The sparks fly and the muscles are flexed in this jazzy joyride.
