Consisting of Misha Vitenson/vi, Fran Felkl/vi, Michael Klotz/va and Jason Calloway/cel, the Alabama String Quartet presents a collection of modern world premiere recordings of material ranging from Cynthia Miller’s 1950 “Bird Quartet” to Lawren Brianna Ware’s “String Quartet No. 4” from 1994 over two compact discs. Some of the material is fairly succinct, such as the four minute “Tempus Fugit” by Tom Rainer (which is rich and textured), while Jel Scott Davis’ four part “Vespers” is a reflective collection of thoughts for almost twenty three. The moods mix modern harmonies of Bartokian qualities with a dash of Mozart as on “Mark Lackey’s “Quartet For Strings” with some impressionistic Vaughan Williams thoughts on Holland Hopson’s “Follows From Hummingbird”. It’s refreshing to hear “modern” not being equaled with “cacophonic”.
