Trumpeter Aaron Bahr creates “musical landscapes” with his team of Clay Lyons/as, Eitan Gofman/ts, Yoav Eshed/g, Jonathan Elbaz/p, Michael Bates/b and Kazuhiro Odagiri/dr on a mix of originals and a couple standards. Of the latter, Elbaz leads the team through a scrambling and modal read of “Lennie’s Pennies” while Lyons, Bahr and Gofman all go bel canto on a rich “Never Let Me Go”. Bahr shows his Lee Morgan chops along with some pretty work by Gofman on a reflective “Gathering Storm” and he rides Odagiri’s steady pulse along side Gofmann on “Fire Breather”. Eshed boogaloos with Elbaz on ”Downtown” with the team reflective as a pond on “Ice Palace”. Modern sounds with vintage ideas.
